Summary

This document defines "Free Network Services" as network services which run on free software, allow users to export all of the information available to them, have a transparent privacy, and do not retroactively reduce users' restrictions to the access of their data.

Preamble

Social and technological advances make it possible for a growing part of humanity to access, create, modify, publish and distribute various kinds of information using network services such as social media sites, collaborative web apps, and software as a service.

As these network services grow to enable the democratic flow of knowledge and ideas, the more potential they have to be tools for empowerment, but the more these service employ non-free software and disregard the privacy of users, the more potential they have to be tools for control and manipulation.

To ensure the graceful functioning of this ecosystem, network services should be free.
