The [[definition]] was initiated by [[User:Erik Möller|Erik Möller]] as a means to resolve ambiguity about the phrase "free content" in the context of the [http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects Wikimedia project family]. It was inspired by the [http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html Free Software Definition].
